BOWLD

reinterpretation project ｜ product｜compact rice cooker｜placing a stone





Bowld is a compact rice cooker designed for single-person households. Inspired by the traditional Korean rice bowl, its form features a wider upper body and a narrower base. The familiar silhouette allows Bowld to blend naturally into the kitchen, making it feel less like a small appliance and more like an object for everyday living.

The dial on top draws inspiration from a traditional cooking method in which a stone was placed on the lid of a pot or cauldron to keep steam from escaping. Reinterpreting this familiar gesture as a simple rotating dial creates an intuitive connection between the traditional act of cooking rice and a contemporary interaction. Designed to make efficient use of limited kitchen space, Bowld also features a concealed cord-retraction button at the back, keeping the power cord neatly stored when not in use.

Beyond its function as a rice cooker, Bowld reinterprets forms and gestures rooted in Korean food culture through a contemporary product experience, connecting traditional references with modern lifestyles.
Bowld는 1인 가구를 위해 디자인된 소형 밥솥이다. 한국의 공기그릇에서 영감을 받아 윗부분이 밑부분보다 넓은 형태적 특징을 제품에 반영하였다. 익숙한 식기의 실루엣은 주방 공간에 자연스럽게 어우러지며, 밥솥을 단순한 소형 가전이 아닌 하나의 생활 오브제로 인식하도록 한다.

상단의 다이얼은 냄비나 가마솥의 뚜껑 위에 돌을 올려 증기가 새어 나가지 않도록 하던 전통적인 조리 방식에서 착안하였다. 돌을 올리고 돌리는 듯한 조작 방식을 통해 밥을 짓는 행위를 직관적이고 친숙한 경험으로 재해석하였다. 또한 1인 가구의 제한된 주방 환경을 고려해 공간 활용과 보관의 편의성을 높였으며, 제품 후면에는 전원 코드를 정리할 수 있는 버튼을 숨겨 사용하지 않을 때에도 깔끔하게 보관할 수 있도록 하였다.

Bowld는 밥을 짓는 기능을 넘어, 한국 전통 식문화에서 발견한 형태와 조리 방식의 기억을 현대적인 제품 경험으로 재해석하여 오늘날의 라이프스타일과 연결한다.
